Ecologically cultivated areas in Romania expanded more than six times in the
last five years, from 17,438 hectares in 2000 to 110,400 ha in 2005 and for
2006 they are estimated to further increase up to 170,000 ha. "Romania has
optimum conditions for the development of ecological agriculture, an
advantage following its European Union integration," Teodora Aldescu,
director in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development,
told Rompres. Extensive areas of land that did not receive high chemical
inputs in the past years, due to the lack of financial means, fertile soil
and the possibility of delimiting some ecological perimeters represent only
a few of Romania's advantages for getting organic products.
