Romania exports weapons to Iraq
In past years, Romania has modernized PUMA helicopters for the Emirates military and MIG 21 airplanes for Croatia. Romania has also delivered weapons and munitions to Iraq. The total value of arms exports was 41.85 million dollars in 2004. Romania has exported diverse military products, from the first to the 22nd category, namely from small caliber weapons and the respective munitions to software and technology, including helicopters, airplanes and components for various equipment, said the president of the National Agency for the Control of Exports (ANCEX), Cristian Munteanu
Exports in 2003 added up to 69.5 million dollars and the agency estimates that no significant change occured in 2005. Romania exported small caliber firearms to the US and to Iraq, although in smaller quantities compared to other Eastern European countries. According to ANCEX, several small and medium weapons producers in Romania have external supply contracts for components of off-road military vehicles, airships and rockets, as well as for modernization of the military electronics industry.
