Gabriel Resources Ltd. has won two court decisions against opponents
of its plan to build a gold and silver mine in Romania.
Romania's Supreme Court ordered a new trial Tuesday to determine whether
construction of the open-pit mine will affect historically important sites,
Gabriel said in a statement yesterday.
"The retrial will not delay the commencement of construction of the Rosia
Montana project, as the discharge certificate relates to an area of the
project to be developed later," Toronto-based Gabriel said. In the second
decision, a Court of Appeal dismissed a request by Alburnus Maior, a group
of property owners, to cancel hearings on an environmental review, known as
an EIA, Gabriel said.
The $437-million (Canadian) project has been stalled for years by opposition
from residents, environmental groups and some Romanian politicians. GBU
(TSX) rose 40 cents to $3.30.
