The government will take out a 41.5 million euro loan from the European
Investment Bank (EIB) for the rehabilitation of the water supply networks in
the cities. The 25-year loan has a grace period of six years. The project
targets the rehabilitation and modernization of the water supply and
management systems in Baia Mare, Bistrita, Drobeta Turnu Severin, Pitesti
and Ramnicu Valcea. The total cost of works is 181.1 million euros. A part
of the financing will come from ISPA funds (130.9 million euros) along with
the EIB loan and the Romanian government will contribute 4.1 million euros.
The government contracted another EIB loan in the amount of 63 million euros
for the opening of the Nicolae Grigorescu city belt subway line and the
purchase of another six subway cars. The loan will also be used for making
access facilities for people with disabilities in accordance with EU
requirements. The EIB recently granted another 29.4 million euro loan to the
government, in a project for the development of infrastructure in small and
medium cities. Thirty-six cities in the Arad, Maramures, Mures, Harghita,
Prahova and Suceava
counties will benefit from the financing.
