Works on the city's second overpass will start next month. The overpass will
ease the area traffic by connecting Colentina and Pantelimon neighborhoods,
going over the railroad in the Gara Obor area, according to General Mayor
Adriean Videanu.
His statements came yesterday during the signing of the contract for the
overpass construction works, which were entrusted to a Portuguese company.
This is the second project of the kind after the Basarab overpass, but a
project which will be 1.9 kilometers long and is designed to connect Nicolae
Titulescu and Grozavesti streets to ease traffic in the area. The overpass
that will connect Colentina and Pantelimon is of great importance, explained
the mayor yesterday, saying it will considerably ease traffic on the city's
median traffic ring.
The project has not yet begun, as construction on the overpass, which costs
over 178 million euros, has been sternly criticized by several Bucharest
residents and opposition party members in the city's General Council.
Portuguese contractor Lena Engenharia e Construcoes obtained the right to
work on the construction of the overpass, which will go from Chisinau
Boulevard, in Pantelimon, to Colentina Street, after winning a public tender
held for the project. The construction will cost almost 24 million RON
(about 6.8 million euros), value-added tax included. Works will begin in two
weeks, earlier than the construction on the Basarab overpass, and will last
for about two years, said Videanu.
As in the case of the Basarab project, an important clause in the contract
for the construction of this new overpass relates to construction deadlines
and the quality of the works. Under the contract, City Hall has the ability
to cancel the contract unilaterally if the contractor delays construction.
According to the document, the contract ends without requiring the
intervention of a court if the contractor receives two consecutive
notifications through which it is informed that it is not fulfilling its
duties as provided.
The construction of the new artery will begin at the end of Doamna Ghica
Street and will go over an empty land on the shore of Colentina Lake, over
the railroad and up to Chisinau Boulevard.
The overpass will be two kilometers long, 85.8 meters wide and will have two
lanes in each direction, which will be separated by a two-meter-wide median.
However, as long as construction works last, traffic will be even worse. A
multitude of reconstruction and repairing works have started all over the
capital in the past year, as announced by Mayor Videanu. Traffic is even
more of a challenge, but City Hall promises that, after 3-4 years of
nightmarish circulation on the city's streets, once all works are complete,
Bucharest will be proud to finally have fluent traffic and quality
infrastructure.
